Artist's Description

Still fairly remote, Cataloochee Valley is part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Once home to a large valley community, the National Park Service has preserved a cluster of homes, schools, barns and churches. The first residents arrived in the 1830s and continued living there for the next century.
Not far from Waynesville, access to Cataloochee Valley follows the narrow Cove Creek Road, a rough gravel road, full of twists, turns and pot holes. Just before your descent into the valley, visitors may pause at a valley overlook where this rush of autumn color was found.
