Artist's Description

There is only one paved road into Burke's Garden, an isolated community of nearly 300 residents. Surrounded by Virginia's Garden Mountain, it appears from the mountaintop that a giant pressed his thumb into the landscape and created this high, hidden farming community.
Miles from another town in Tazwell County, local residents depended on the Burke's Garden general store and post office. Unable to stay afloat, the store has closed, and gas pumps still record a time when gasoline was 75 cents a gallon. There is still no newspaper delivery in the town today, no cable television or cell service, no traffic lights and no post office. Life is very peaceful in Burke's Garden.

About Ben Prepelka

Ben Prepelka

Born in western Pennsylvania, Ben quickly discovered that his parents were passionate about travel, photography, oil painting and wildlife. Being the youngest member of his family, he grew up exploring much of the eastern half of the United States at an early age with his older brothers. Ben's photography is about that part of his youth, echoing that same passion that his parents had of the Great Outdoors. Visit
