Description
The Great Smoky Mountains are among the most famous mountain ranges on the planet, stretching across the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. Ancient and well worn, some of the highest peaks are just over a mile high. This view takes in the southern section of the range in Haywood County, where the ever-present blue haze continues to cover the forested mountain peaks. Of course it's this haze that gave the Smokies their name. Even thought the area was heavily logged during the early 1900s, the Smoky Mountain forest makes up the largest old growth stand in the Eastern United States.
This early morning scene captures some of the first rays of the sun as they break over the mountaintops. It's the beginning of a glorious day in the Smokies.
