Description
Cataloochee Valley was once home to a large community in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. The first residents arrived in the 1830s, and continued living there for the next century.
Finally displaced by the National Park Service in the 1930, historic churches, a school house, a number of old barns and out buildings and a variety of homes are preserved in Cataloochee Valley. Pictured here is the Palmer barn.
Not far from Waynesville, access to Cataloochee Valley is still pretty remote. The narrow main road, Cove Creek Road, is a rough gravel road, full of twists, turns and pot holes.
