Description
Clingmans Dome, named for American Civil War general Thomas Lanier Clingman, is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the state of Tennessee. At 6643 feet in elevation, it takes a seven mile winding road from U.S. Highway 441 in Newfound Gap to reach the summit parking lot. A very steep half-mile hiking trail leads to the summit of Clingmans Dome where visitors may see up to 100 miles on a very clear day.
Built in 1959, the Clingmans Dome observation tower offers a circular lookout platform accessed by a spiral ramp. Mirroring the the Clingmans Dome Trail, the ramp rises at a 12 percent grade. Surrounded by a Southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest biome, this photo captures the observation tower shrouded in the mist of low level clouds. Sign boards point out many mountain peaks and cities which visitors may pick out in the distance from this lofty perch.
