Description
Built along the bluffs of the Mississippi River, Dubuque delights in its destinction of being Iowa's oldest city. Imparting his name on the area, French-Canadian fur trader Julien Dubuque arrived in 1785. Once the territory was opened for American settlement, Dubuque secured a town charter in 1837.
Main Street’s town clock is a favorite among city residents. Listed on the National Register, the town clock has stood over the city plaza since 1864. The clock stands 108 feet over the plaza and serves as centerpiece at special events.
