Description
Standing just outside the city limits of Gainesville, the first Liberty Hill schoolhouse was built in 1869 for rural black children. The first schoolmaster was George Smith, earning a salary of 22 dollars per month. Parents supplemented his income with food, and wood to heat the one-room schoolhouse. Teaching about 30 children, the school provided education for the first six school years. The school you see today dates back to 1892 and cost 450 dollars to build. As with many 19th century schools, the building was kept in repair by parent and school trustees.
The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
