Description
Lost Creek State Natural Area, lying on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau in White County, Tennessee, features one of the entrances to Lost Creek Cave and a delicate waterfall known as Lost Creek Falls. Why is it lost? Once the creek flows over the 40 foot falls, the creek disappears into a sink. During the summer cold air is trapped at the bottom of the sink between the cave and waterfall, and gathers humidity from the air. This extra moisture creates the perfect environment for mosses, ferns and flowers. Lost Creek Cave is one of the larger caves in Tennessee, with 7 miles of passages mapped.
It's a short walk through the tulip, sycamore, sweetgum, hemlock, oak, and hickory trees to the falls and cave area from the parking area. Thanks to the generosity of the Rylander family, the public is able to enjoy this state natural area.
