Description
About 20 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains, Max Patch Mountain is very popular stop during the autumn season. Once you've climbed to Max Patch, topping out at 4,629 feet, sighseers take a short hike up to the mountaintop where you'll find a 360- degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. Here the Great Balsams and Black Mountains are covered in bands of colorful autumn foliage.
The 4,600-foot mountaintop was cleared and used as pasture in the 1800s. Today the Forest Service keeps the 350-acre tract of open land cleared.
