Description
Once called Peaks Station, this small South Carolina Piedmont town was the site of a rail stop in the mid 1800s. Today Peak is still a small town, and with only about 65 residents it continues to retain its charm despite being only about 10 miles from Interstate 26.
Close to the Broad River and the Palmetto Trail, Peak's other calling card is the remains of old St. Simon's Episcopal Church. Located on private property, the old church continues to disappear in a tangle of vines and brush. Built in the very early 1900s, church membership soon suffered along with local Carolina farmers when cotton and tobacco crops lost their value. During the late 1920s, the Depression Era signaled the departure of many of the town's residents, spelling the final end of St Simons as an active church.
