Description
Not the typical lighthouse tower, the Sanibel Island Lighthouse was obviously built for function rather than its aesthetic qualities. The open iron pipe design was intended to allow Florida's extreme hurricane winds to pass through without much resistance. The light has survived many storms over the past 120 years, including Hurricane Donna and a severe 1944 storm that reportedly caused the tower to sway.
The lighthouse still operates and is the main draw at the lighthouse park. Operated and maintained by the City of Sanibel. Not long after the quarter-million dollar restoration project in 2013, the lighthouse and keepers cottages were added to the City of Sanibel Register of Historic Sites and Structures.
