Description
Kokomo's history dates back to 1840, when successful trader David Foster erected a log courthouse near Wildcat Creek and named the town Kokomo. With the discovery of natural gas in 1886, the land which was home for the Miami Indian tribe for centuries, leaped into the Industrial Age. With an offer of free land and free natural gas, companies poured into Kokomo and Indiana's Howard County.
One of the many companies to take the offer was the Strawboard Company, and the spinoff Diamond Plate Glass Company. These successful businesses were established by Monroe Seiberling. Seiberling didn't stay long in Kokomo, but long enough to build the Seiberling Mansion. Following a mixture of late Victorian architecture, the mansion boasts 15 rooms and a grand ballroom on the entire 3rd floor. The home is open for public tours.
