Description
Although it appears similar to the famous granite dome in Georgia, this Stone Mountain pluton creates the calling card for a North Carolina state park. Home to the largest open-face granite rock quarry in the world, North Carolina's Blue Ridge escarpment is made up of almost entirely of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Here in this transition zone the state's topography quickly changes from the Piedmont to the mountainous region. Rising 700 feet above the adjacent valley floor, the park's granite dome just begs to be climbed. A 4.5 loop trail leads to the summit as well as other park attractions.
