Description
Huge ledges of 300 million year old Connoquenessing sandstone, stretching across the Tygart River Valley, are responsible for a series of thundering waterfalls at Valley Falls State Park. Taking advantage of the raw power of West Virginia's Tygart River, industrious settlers established a sawmill in 1827. By 1847, John Bradshaw and William Whitescarver established a grist mill at this site as well, selling products under The Pride of the Valley brand. Today, only a few telltale pillars are all that remain of these early Taylor County enterprises along the riverbanks.
