Description
Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River, the Washington Oaks Gardens were established by Louise and Owen Young. Here along the Matanzas River they built a winter retirement home in 1936, all surrounded by beautiful gardens. In 1965, the Young family donated most of the Flagler County property to the State of Florida. Garden pathways and reflecting pools are lined with native and exotic species, from azaleas and camellias to the tropical bird of paradise, all shaded by a 200 to 300 year old picturesque live oak hammock. Being a descendant of George Washington and these massive live oaks helped inspired the name.
