Description
One of only two National Historic Landmark Districts in Florida, Ybor City continues to enjoy its legacy as the "Cigar Capital of the World." Founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers, thousands of immigrant workers from Cuba, Spain, and Italy came to roll millions of cigars every year. Located just northeast of downtown Tampa, the Ybor City Historic District exhibits a distinct architectural, culinary, and cultural heritage. Built and populated almost entirely by immigrants, retail shops, produce and grocery stores, box factories, print shops, clothing stores and other shops followed the cigar industry and its workers.
Today thousands of Ybor City tourists enjoy the sights, sounds, aromas and "Old World" heritage of the area. Pictured here is East 7th Avenue caught in a brief rain-shower, when visitors quickly scurry into any of the many shops.
