Description
Covering 415 square miles, Rocky Mountain National Park is listed as one of the best parks in Colorado, and perhaps the country. It continues to draw in nearly 5 million visitors each year, all enjoying the spectacular Rocky Mountains.
One of the best ways to get acquainted with the park is a drive over the Continental Divide via Trail Ridge Road. Cresting at Milner Pass (10,759 feet), this alpine route is one of the highest paved highways in the United States. After the grand tour on Trail Ridge Road, park-goers are invited to make the most of their stay with many areas to explore and an opportunity to gather stories to tell back home. The park's alpine lakes, cool mountain streams, huge wildlife population, waterfalls and marvelous meadows keep visitors entertained throughout their visit.
On the east side of the park just west of Estes Park, is the Beaver Meadows Entrance Station. Just passed this welcome station at Beaver Meadows is a great place to view wildlife. If you're able to get an early start at Beaver Meadows there is a chance to spot resident elk, deer and an occasional black bear. It's best to drive slowly anyway, and it's one way to see wildlife. The other is on foot. Although the Upper Beaver Meadows Loop hike totals 5 miles, there are shorter ways to enjoy this section of the park. And during the autumn season, not only are the elk herds active, colorful fall foliage dots the landscape.
