Artist's Description
The Fambro-Arthur House at the Old Cahawba Archaeological Site is named for two of the owners. Judge W.W. Fambro built the Dallas County home in 1841. It was a common practice at the time to use building material from older structures, and it's a good possibility in this wood-frame house.
D. EzeKiel Arthur was born into slavery. After the Civil War he traveled to different states, hoping to find his mother and sisters, as all were slaves before the war. They returned to Cahawba, and Arthur purchased the Fambro House in 1894. The Arthur family continued to live in the house for nearly a century.
This old house is just one of the many interesting ruins located in the Old Cahawba Park, Alabama's first permanent state capital.
