Description
Dixville Notch, located in New Hampshire's Great North Woods Region, is the state's northernmost mountain pass. The Notch, a sizable break in the Crystal Mountains, marks the dividing line for two of New Hampshire's watersheds. Water from the east eventually flows into the Androscoggin River, while westward flows head toward the Connecticut River. Here, on each side of the scenic byway, streams create some of the beautiful scenery in two roadside parks in the Dixville Notch Wildlife Viewing Area. And there's little doubt that autumn is a special time of year for sightseers and Dixville Notch State Park visitors.
When approaching Dixville Notch from the southeast, visitors are easily enticed to continue through the pass where the Notch opens up and Lake Gloriette appears below. Here the Balsams Country Club has been entertaining guests since the late 1860s.
