Description
Just south of the Oregon coastal midpoint, Face Rock Scenic Wayside is a popular stop as the park protects the rocks and tidal flats as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. An important nesting habitat for birds, there's a footpath down to the shoreline for beachcombers to scour the tide pools for sealife. Scattered among the seastacks it's common find sea stars, crabs, anemones, mussels, limpets, nudibranchs, sea urchins, chitons, and sea cucumbers.
While visitors are exploring the beach it may be possible to hear an Indian maiden's voice on the wind. If you're content to spend your time at the overlook your may be able to pick out her face on Face Rock. Also from the overlook, you may spot gray whales as they migrate up and down the coast. Gray whales are one of the most commonly sighted whales on the coast.
