Just west of Washington DC, the Potomac River builds up speed and forces its way through a rather narrow Mather Gorge. Named for the first director of the National Park Sevice, Stephen Mather, the wild looking cascade drops in a series of thundering waterfalls through the gorge. Once part of the Northern Virginia Parks System, Great Falls National Park joined the national park ranks in 1966.
A short walk from the visitor center offers several viewpoints which overlook the falls. A web of scenic trails follow the Potomac River all the way to the southern end of the park at Difficult Run. Beyond the falls, the Potomac continues to entertain kayakers with milder class II-III ripples. Several Patowmack Canal crossovers allow hikers, cyclists, and equestrians access to a handful of western trails. Whitewater trips and rock climbing here are very dangerous and should be attempted by only the experienced.
Born in western Pennsylvania, Ben quickly discovered that his parents were passionate about travel, photography, oil painting and wildlife. Being the youngest member of his family, he grew up exploring much of the eastern half of the United States at an early age with his older brothers. Ben's photography is about that part of his youth, echoing that same passion that his parents had of the Great Outdoors. Visit
