Artist's Description

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) wildflower program has been in the news ever since crimson clover was seen planted along the highways just south of Tallahassee during the 60s. Seems it all started when a contractor bought roadside sod from a cattle rancher. The sod contained crimson clover seeds used in fields as a winter forage for the cattle and as a way to enrich the pasture soil with nitrogen.
Roadside phlox, not native to Florida, is now widely used on roadsides throughout the northern half of the state which matures to a height of about 12 inches by late spring. Coming in a variety of colors, ranging from white to deep crimson, most are various shades of pink. Thriving in the sunny, often-dry conditions during Florida's spring, mass plantings of phlox put on a spectacular show for miles on end. If you are traveling in north Florida during April-June you can't miss this awesome beautification project.
