Description
Initial plans for the capital city of the Lone Star State called for a grid of city streets alongside the Colorado River. Named after "the father of Texas," Stephen F. Austin, city streets still resemble the first plan conceived by Judge Edwin Waller in 1839. Chosen to be the new capital city of the Republic of Texas in 1839, the city remained the state capital after annexation by the United States in 1845.
The Texas Capitol is widely recognized as one of the nation's most distinguished state capitols. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The Capitol's exterior walls are built of Texas red granite from Burnet County, while the interior and walls are Texas limestone. The massive three-story Sunset Red Texas Granite structure is the largest capitol building in the United States, standing 14 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol building.
