Description
At Yellowstone National Park springtime snowmelt floods the Yellowstone River which in turn rips through Yellowstone's Grand Canyon and over both major waterfalls in the Park. Seen from Canyon Village, the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone are some of the most popular photographic subjects.
One of two major falls on the Yellowstone River, the Lower Falls is among the top ten waterfall settings in the United States. Although the falls is just 308 feet tall, canyon depths range from 800 to 1200 feet. From Lookout Point, Red Rock Point, Artist Point and from various locations on the North Rim and South Rim trails, the earth tones in the canyon walls are quite evident, getting their color from the iron casts within the rock. Most of the yellows in the canyon are the result of iron oxidizing in the rock rather than sulfur, as many people believe.
Along the canyon's north and south rims visitors find a half dozen vantage points and overlooks. Five trails and a paved drive on both north and south rims lead to many of the canyon's splendid views. Some of the trails lead visitors to close-up views of the falls, where visitors may experience the tremendous power of the Yellowstone River. In this scene you may be able to spot a cluster of waterfall fans near the brink of the falls.
