Artist's Description

Named for former mayor of Jacksonville, the John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge is locally known as the Main Street Bridge. Spanning the St Johns River, the bridge was built as a vertical lift bridge to accomodate larger ships. Dedicated on July 17, 1941, the Mount Vernon Bridge Company was responsible for construction, which totaled 1.5 million dollars. One of the most recognizable features of downtown Jacksonville, the 4 lane bridge is shown in the open position in this city scene.
