Description
Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the St. Joseph Cathedral is the oldest church building in the metropolitan area of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The third church built for the St. Joseph Parish, Father John Cambiaso was the architect. Partially destroyed by Union forces during the Civil War the church building was rebuilt afterwards, adding an impressive steeple in 1891, and the stucco facing over the red brick exterior in 1895. As the parish continued to grow, the building was enlarged and notable additions included stained glass windows from Germany and the mosaic stations of the cross from Italy.
