Description
Said to be the oldest town in Colorado, San Luis was settled mostly by Hispanic families during the mid 1800s. The historic town also features the oldest church in the state.
San Luis is most famous for its Stations of the Cross where a half mile pathway winds up the mountainside, passing by 15 works of art. Each station features a bronze sculpture depicting a scene from crucifixion of Jesus Christ. One of the most dramatic scenes, at station eleven, portrays Jesus being nailed to the cross. The pathway ends at the magnificent adobe chapel at the top of the mesa. The series of bronze sculptures is the work of San Luis artist Huberto Maestas.
