Description
Augusta Tomorrow, a key organization for the development of the Augusta Riverfront, transformed the area into a thriving tourist center and business corridor. During the first phase of Riverwalk construction a breach of the levee was needed to gain access to the Savannah River, actually requiring an act of Congress to issue permits. Phase one was completed in 1988, complete with brick walkways on the top of the levee and tree-lined walks along the banks of the river. Later expansion projects added three additional blocks along the river.
Pictured here is a magnificent fountain sculpture placed at the Augusta Riverwalk grand entrance on the cul de sac of James Brown Boulevard. The curved stairways mimic the curves of the fountain and cul-de-sac.
