Description
The bighorn sheep, with a white belly, rump, and muzzle, is best known for its large horns and agility. The ram has large, thick curving horns. Pictured here is an ewe, with horns that are more slender and less curved. Seen climbing rocks with ease, their hooves are hard on the outside and soft inside, allowing for great traction on slippery rocks.
Desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), on the verge of becoming extinct, have made a comeback in parts of western Colorado. A small population was reintroduced to Colorado National Monument in 1979. About 40 bighorn thrive in and around the park. Their diet consists of bluegrass, brome, fescue, clover phlox, and cinquefoil. This bighorn ewe was perched on a cliff edge in the Colorado National Monument, seemingly having no fear of the cliffs or the park visitors.
