Description
The Sawatch Range, a prominent mountain range in central Colorado, includes eight of the 20 highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains. These picturesque summits include Mount Elbert, the highest peak in the Rockies, and a line of the Collegiate Peaks. Easily seen from CO-24 and US-285 on a clear day, these peaks are named for a handful of famous northeastern American colleges that include Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Belford, and Oxford. The Sawatch Range is dominated by fifteen peaks in excess of 14,000 feet, known among mountain climbers as the fourteeners. This scene captures a light late summer snowfall, not uncommon at these high elevations.
