Description
Nearing the South Carolina state line, Tybee Island is a coastal barrier island just east of Savannah, Georgia. The small coastal community is known for its wide, sandy beaches, including the ever popular South Beach. Making up the easternmost point in Georgia, South Beach features a pier and pavilion.
The original Tybrisa Pier and Pavilion, built by the Central of Georgia Railroad, stood for 75 years. Lost in a fire, the new Tybrisa Pavilion was built and dedicated in 1996.
A closer look at this photo reveals that the pier is a popular spot for fishing as well as beachcombing. Besides the island's spectacular beaches and great fishing, the area draws in vacationeers who enjoy the Tybee Island Lighthouse, Fort Pulaski National Monument, and the Marine Science Center.
