Description
Built in the mid 1800s, New Jersey's East Point Lighthouse was designed to guide mariners into the Maurice River from Delaware Bay. The state's second oldest lighthouse, located at the mouth of the Maurice River, was extinguished at the onset of World War II. After the war the Coast Guard decided to abandon the lighthouse, feeling its services were no longer required.
Hoping to save the deteriorated lighthouse, the Maurice River Historical Society was formed to restore the 120 year old structure in 1970. Unfortunately the building and lighthouse was nearly destroyed by fire before the society could begin its restoration project. Many society fundraisers and several governmental grants helped to replace the light station roof and lantern room. Once the windows and shutters were replaced, the lighthouse began to inspire the historical society members to have the lighthouse returned to duty. By 1980, the Coast Guard was convinced to reactivate the lighthouse. Powered by a modern beacon, the East Point Light shines once more on the Jersey Shore.
