Description
One of many volcanic remnants in the Four Corners region of the American West, Agathla Peak (Agathlan) is easily viewed from the roadside in the northeastern corner of Arizona. Classified as a diatreme or maar-diatreme, this peak is the second most common type of volcano. The name Agathla comes from a Navajo name 'Aghaała' meaning much wool. Apparently antelope and deer fur accumulated on the rock and was quite noticable.
Its 'sister', Ship Rock Peak, is about 100 miles away and each can be easily mistaken, one for the other. The mountain is considered sacred by the Navajo today, and climbing is not allowed. Rising over 1500 feet, the first known assent was first accomplished during the mid 20th century.
