Description
Meaning Beautiful Forks, the Belle Fourche (bell foosh) River has its headwaters to the southwest of Devils Tower and flows nearly 300 miles eastward to the Cheyenne River. Named by French trappers, these newcomers were some of the first non-natives to explore the area. They worked along the river and traded with local Indians during the mid 1850s. The Black Hills gold rush of 1876 lured more and more settlers to the area.
Today it's the Devils Tower that attracts many visitors to this area. An important part of the ecosystems along the northern reaches of the Black Hills, here the Belle Fourche River flows gently past the Devils Tower National Monument. With its distinct red sandstone cliffs, this section of the river creates a beautiful landscape scene.
