Description
Land of the "laughing waters" to the Osage Indians, today's Ha Ha Tonka State Park is one of Missouri's most popular parks. Filled with natural wonders, water related activities, the Ha Ha Tonka Castle ruins and nearly 20 miles of well blazed trails, visitors will find plenty of marvelous sites to explore here in west-central Missouri.
Envisioning a European style castle overlooking the gorge area of Ha Ha Tonka Spring, Robert McClure Snyder purchased 5,000 acres of this woodland paradise. Shortly after construction began in 1905, Snyder was killed in one of the first automobile accidents in Kansas. His sons carried on Snyder's dream, completing the three story castle, stone stables, greenhouses and an 80 foot water tower. Unfortunately, the house and stables burned in 1942, with only the stone walls surviving today.
