Description
Located where the Apalachicola River meets the Apalachee Bay, the bustling port of Apalachicola became the third largest on the Gulf of Mexico by 1830. Today, the town is still a working fishing village.
One of the most important features of the the Big Bend bay is the Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve, one of the most extensive sea grass system in the United States. From this rich nursery and vast cluster of protected seagrass beds come one of Florida's most important seafood industries. In this rich breeding ground, small fish, oysters, crabs and many other aquatic species create one of Florida's most important seafood industries.
Riding the economic wave of this important port city, Sicilian immigrant Joe Taranto opened his seafood business in Apalachicola in 1923. Built during the mid 1900s, this stuccoed seafood house on Water Street has seen it glory days come to an end. Closed around 1990, they old building adds a touch of nostalgia to this tourist haven along the river.
