Description
Here at the South Yuba State Park not only will you find the longest single span covered bridge in the United States, but also a restored 1927 Shell gas station. Back when gasoline was 12 cents per gallon, this filling station used a gravity-fed “Visible Pump" to dispense its product. For those California vacationers who were visiting the Kneebone Beach Resort, the station store also sold camping supplies and food. A cold storage room packed with ice kept the produce, milk and meat fresh.
The hardworking Kneebone family collected tolls from bridge and further enhanced the Bridgeport Resort, building several cottages, a dining hall and a dance pavilion. Another setback occurred during the Depression years when hydraulic placer mining fouled the river upstream from the Kneebone resort, signaling the end of their business by the mid 40s. Today, the Bridgeport Covered Bridge and the historic Shell station are pleasant reminders of this century old vacation spot.
