Description
While the majority of the first Texas settlements were based along the state's rivers, by the mid 1800s farmers and ranchers moved into the vast semi-arid plains. Daniel Halladay, inventor and machinest, produced the first reliable windmill in 1854. Mainly used to pump ground water to the surface, Halladay’s practical invention brought the most essential commodity, water, to land-hungry immigrants. For roughly 75 dollars, the semiarid land was now livable throughout the west Texas plains. The windmill, a Texas icon, is still used today and celebrated with decorative pieces found throughout the Lone Star State.
