Description
At the center of today's historic district, Ocala's public square was designated in its original plat in 1846. Three different courthouses occupied this space from 1851 to 1965. When public efforts failed to save the last courthouse, the building was razed and returned to its original purpose. The Old Courthouse Square was landscaped as a public park, complete with a large gazebo, paved areas, park benches, lighting and colorful plantings. The Historic Downtown Square, a gathering place for concerts and community events, is also well within walking distance to shopping, dining, and nightlife, including the Ocala Downtown Market.
