Description
There is little doubt as to the longhorn's historic significance in the state of Texas. Years following the Civil War the Texas longhorn cattle breed also had a huge impact on the state's economy. Figuring into the state's agricultural prosperity, there are a few very good reasons longhorns remains a popular breed.
The cattle's intellect and excellent memory make it easier to teach and control the herd. Texas longhorn herds are also eligible for agricultural tax exemptions.
Where many other cattle breeds retain ingrained color genetics, the longhorns have a broad mix of genes that show up in various shades and patterns in their coats. During the last century the average length the distinctive horns of the longhorn breed have nearly doubled. In fact the record holder's horns measure more than 11 feet. Now that's a "longhorn!"
