Description
When heading south towards Moab from I-70, Utah's Route 128 offers a great preview of what lies ahead in one of state's most popular vacation destinations. The Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway follows the river for 44 miles. This scenic byway marks the beginning of Canyonland Country and previews the impressive canyons carved out by the famous Colorado River. Imposing vertical cliffs, made of Wingate sandstone, loom above the roadway. Fishers Towers and the La Sal Mountains rise in the distance, reminding vacationers of the possibilities of places to explore.
Up ahead, the city of Moab is conveniently centered in the midst of three majestic park sites. Overlooks at the Dead Horse State Park tower 2000 feet above the Colorado River. One of these national parks highlight one of the world's greatest concentration of natural arches and the other features incredible canyons cut by the Green and Colorado rivers. Some of these natural wonders will keep sightseers busy with a drive into the La Sal Mountains, as well as a trip through Castle Valley where towering spires are reminiscent of Europe's ancient cathedrals.
