Description
Although Portland Head Lighthouse marks the southern approach into Portland's natural harbor, Cape Elizabeth's rocky ledges were so treacherous two more beacons were erected. Hoping to eliminate confusion with the nearby Portland Head Lighthouse, twin lighthouses were built on a twelve acre bluff overlooking the southern extent of Casco Bay. The first lighthouses were poorly built and replaced inn 1875. These twins still stand today and inspired the creation of Twin Lights State Park. While the lighthouses are on private property, they are visible from the park.
