Description
Long before automobile travel, Door County residents relied on lake bound ships for supplies and transportation around the Great Lakes area. Passing through the channel between the Strawberry Islands and Eagle Bluff, sailing ships were often leery of this treacherous passage. Desiring secure transportation, a solid Cream-City brick lighthouse was built in 1868. Perched on top of the 40 foot Eagle Bluff, the light station, with its integral tower, housed a reliable Fresnel lens. Reaching its peak in maritime traffic at the turn of the century, the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse provided safe passage for as many as 4000 ships in a year.
