Description
Benjamin Franklin Parkway, a mile long avenue, diagonally slices through center-city Philadelphia. The parkway, running from city hall and ending at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is the center of city culture. The avenue was designed in the early 1900s by Frenchman Jacques Greber, and today, the boulevard displays flags from every country of the world.
At southern end of the boulevard is view City Hall, topped with a 37 foot bronze statue of William Penn. At the other end is the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rocky Balboa's jog up the front entrance steps of the museum in 1976 still has fans repeating this Oscar-winning film scene. Today, museum officials dread the fact that more people are drawn to one of the largest museums in the world because of the Rocky Steps rather than the works of Van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir and Monet.
Off to the side of the Rocky Steps you'll find the Rocky Statue. The statue is a bronze sculpture of the movie character Rocky Balboa. Rocky was an inspirational tale of a local boxer played by Sylvester Stallone. Originally created for the movie Rocky III in 1982, the statue has become one of Philadelphia’s most popular pieces of public art.
