Description
Located in the southern tier of Vermont, the town of Andover was originally chartered in 1761. Neighboring Weston was originally the western section of Andover and was known as West Town. Because of a highland ridge, namely the Terrible Mountain, travel was next to impossible between the communities. By 1799, Weston was sectioned off as its own community.
Located among the Green Mountains, a canal was cut to power Weston's mills. By 1859 Weston's population was 950 and businesses included sawmills, a gristmill, tanneries, a machine shop and a carding mill.
In 1946 the Orton family opened the Vermont Country Store in Weston on Main Street. Vrest Orton had moved back to Vermont from New York and married Mildred Ellen Wilcox. Inspired by his father's general store in North Calais, the couple bought a former country inn and co-founded the Vermont Country Store. The general store has remained in the Orton family and takes pride in being the "Purveyors of the Practical and Hard-to-Find."

What a great series, Ben. I visited the store with the covered bridge on its grounds. Nice work. - Mike (V/F)
