Description
A popular Tennessee recreation area, the 870-acre Rock Island State Park covers an area where the Caney Fork, Collins and Rocky rivers converge. Named for an island in the Caney Fork River, the river once provided power to a Rock Island 19th century textile mill and a 20th century hydroelectric plant. When the the Caney Fork River was dammed up for the power plant, the water backed up toward the Collins River and found its way through the gorge walls to form Twin Falls. The falls drop about 80 feet into the Caney Fork River, about 40 feet below the top of the gorge. This view from a Power House Road trail captures kayakers in the lower left of this image, offering a sense of scale to this thundering wall of water.
