Description
Watkins Glen, a small town in south-central New York State, is famous for America's first road racing track. The town hosted Formula One Grand Prix racing for nearly 20 consecutive years. The village, here in the Finger Lakes Region, is also home for a spectacular gorge and a series of 19 cascading waterfalls.
Here in the gorge at Watkins Glen State Park, Glen Creek carved its way through hundreds of layers of sedimentary rock, exposing a series of ledges that make up this unique canyon. The gorge is narrow and seldom sees daylight. Here the microclimate in the gorge remains cool and moist, providing excellent conditions for ferns and mosses. Visitors, who choose the main entrance, encounter over 800 steps while they climb the rock lined pathways during their ascent through the 2.5 mile gorge.
