Description
South Dakota's Black Hills visitors are drawn to the area by its famous sculptures, granite peaks, historic old west towns and breathtaking mountain scenery. Spearfish Canyon Byway is one of the best ways to enjoy the Black Hills as it twists and turns on its way along the route. Here a forest of ponderosa pine and spruce seem to find a way to grow from the canyon's steep rocky slopes. Aspen, birch and oak trees line the edges of Spearfish Creek and put colorful show during early fall. What's really an attention-getter are the canyon's thousand foot high walls that rise up sharply from the creek bed.
This scenic drive, following the heart of the canyon, also features three of the area's picturesque waterfalls. While Bridal Veil Falls is located alongside FSR-222, Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls require waterfall fans to take to the trails. Pictured here is Spearfish Falls, one of the most popular stops along the scenic byway. Part of the Spearfish Canyon Nature Area, Spearfish Falls is also considered one of the prettiest falls in the Black Hills. Seen here, Little Spearfish Creek drops off a 47-foot limestone ledge, creating this splendid scene. The round trip distance to the falls is under a mile, which is one of the reasons it's so popular.
